I'm not one to read self help/ business books but when I got the chance to read a snippet of the beginning, thanks to Bookish First, I found myself hooked. I have a super small craft business so I thought maybe this is the book to help me get a bigger clientele. What I found was just ok advice, almost all common sense.
What I greatly enjoyed about the book were the collective stories of how did some of the biggest businesses today get started from Allbirds, to Away, to even Larabars and Five Guys. I loved reading how they got their start, how little or how much money they had and what poor and good business deals they went through. I about had a heart attack reading about the men who were trying to create the yogurt company. Reading these stories was not only entertaining but made me appreciate their businesses more (I went out and bought a Larabar). It even persuaded me to download some episodes of the podcast of the same name. But, I also felt- was this Guy Raz's way of getting us to listen to his podcast the whole time? Either way, it worked for me.
As for advice on helping my business, I learned a little but not a lot. Mainly because I'm not looking to expand and make millions off what I do but also since felt Raz counter on the advice he gave. One moment he'd mention how little money a business had when starting and they were fine. Then the next story right after would be about another business and how the owner was already rich coming from a rich family. It all pretty much boiled down to sheer luck. I was entertained. It wasn't a book I sped through, I did read other books in between but overall I enjoyed it very much.
