I was so pulled into the story from the beginning that I got confused when I tried to move on to the next page only to realize that I had reached the end of the "first look" and have to wait for the book to be published. I love the world-building so far and the characters are starting to develop, the author is revealing them a little at a time which is something I prefer. I get to know the character's background as it relates to what is going on so that I feel I am growing along with them rather than getting an information dump about them. I already see the feel of SJM (think TOG) and Leigh Bardugo (more Six of Crows vibe with different types of Grisha). This is not to say that it is the same type of story, just the feeling you get while reading, the connection to the world and the characters. I think I am going to really enjoy the FMC, Quell, because she has so much potential and she appears to be very self-aware and also because she has a connection with her mom that is unique and not one we see all the time within this genre where the norm is more absentee family.
