Above all else, this is a ghost story. Three young girls disappear one night in the time it takes their parents to stop and look at some fireworks. A month later, they return. They have no memory of where they went or what happened to them. But they are changed. Their hair is different. So are their eyes and their manner. Their father is convinced these are not his daughters, but he kills himself shortly after proclaiming that. The world is sure these are the same girls as before and everything is fine.
Grey has used her unworldly beauty to become a model, an actress and finally a respected fashion designer and icon. Vivi is the bassist in a punkish rock band, just as far from her sister as she can be. Iris just wants to be normal, plain and without strange abilities.
The story is not about Grey or Vivi, although they do have a part to play. It's Iris's search for her normal, or at least the why of her strange abilities. Those abilities are wound up in doorways that no longer lead to where they were built to go to, but instead lead to the Halfway. Something in the Halfway has taken Grey and it is up to Iris to find her and bring her back to the world.
There is adventure. There is revelation. There is knowledge. There is fear, death and a fight with a monster. There is resolution. I liked the story.
