After a horrifying and mysterious event in their childhood, the Hollow Sisters became a well-known trio for their striking beauty, compelling auras, and strange abilities. While her two older sisters found their niche in the outside world, Iris enjoys her feeling of normalcy, until her oldest sister, Grey, disappears and childhood memories begin to unravel and fantasy becomes fact.

House of Hollow is unlike any other tale I have read and I greatly enjoyed the uniqueness and peculiarities found within the plot. This novel is richly woven with an enchanting beauty on first glance but twisty darkness right under the surface, much like a glance of the beautifully flowing cover. The author does a fantastic job creating a gothic tale with grotesquely wondrous settings and descriptions. The tone and mood provided a compelling atmosphere of wonder and just the right amount of creepiness that kept me interested but not scared. The whole book read like an oxymoron with comparisons that were beautifully hideous. From the gorgeous descriptions of dresses, corpse-like smells, fantastical bodies, and rotting wood, nothing was what I expected, including the ending. I enjoyed following Iris’s journey to solve the mystery of what happened to her, why she and her sisters were so different from others, and why they are being hunted.

If you enjoy fantasy, mystery, gorgeously grotesque imagery, and novels such as Mexican Gothic, House of Salt and Sorrows, or The Hollow Places, I strongly recommend this unique and imaginative read.
