This was a solid 3.5 stars for me even though the story itself is very different from what I typically read and enjoy. When I first read the synopsis, I misread it and thought this would be a realistic mystery/thriller story. I haven't read very many magical realism (which is the genre I'd say this book falls into though it was also a mystery as well. Had I known that was the backbone of this book, I probably would have given it a pass, so I'm actually quite happy I misread the synopsis because I enjoyed this and it reminded me to keep an open mind and give any book which sounds interesting a try regardless of what genre they fall into.

House of Hollows is extremely well-written, especially for such a strange, spooky story, the writing is quite beautiful. The writing very lyrical, while the mood/feel of the book is dark and strange which I can't say I've ever seen before, and its such a perfect kind of storytelling for this sort of tale. That's definitely the most appealing part of this book for me.

The actual overall plot though was difficult for me to enjoy or really get into, but I have no doubt that is purely specific to my own tastes and not a actual fault of the book itself. I have no doubt that it will capture the attention of many other readers, specifically readers who enjoy gloomy fairy tale type stories.
