One of my favorite things is when two opposing ideas war against each other in fiction, and the opening pages of Hotel Magnifique manages this opposition beautifully. There is a sense of something so very wrong with the hotel, but the tantalizing idea of magic and dreams coming true is also stunningly vibrant and alive. It's a tug-of-war I hope stays throughout the story and I'm very invested in knowing more.
