Coming of Age
Honey could arguably be framed to readers as a coming-of-age story. The trajectory that Banta takes aptly nicknamed Honey is one that we have all seen before - and yet… while all too familiar of a story, Banta still manages to create a story and characters and plot that, when combined together, paint a new innocence in a main character. Even then, one could argue that the supporting characters from Honey’s mother to her fellow industry peers each have their own qualities of innocence.
I read Honey in a few short hours on a plane ride - it made for a quick and easy read. However, despite the story line and themes, I found that I could only credit 3 stars to it. While a unique take on a coming-of-age story, I found that the story itself was all top predictable and that the ending left me wanting more. I would consider another read from Banta but cannot guarantee that it would make the top of my list.
