This is the story of how a young boy with a very rough start in life was able to go against all odds and succeed. When I say succeed, I don’t mean that he made it big in the music industry or as an author. In my opinion he succeeded because he went from feeling lost to realizing why he was the way he was, accepting that fact, and turning his life around for the better. I don’t want to leave any spoilers, so I am going to stop there.

Mikell escaped from the Synanon cult as a very young boy with his mother and brother. The years that follow are years with him living in poverty and being subjected to things that a child of that age should never have to see or do. The story starts as being told through the eyes of that young boy. He spends his days with an unfit mother and a brother who beats on him. As the story unfolds, the narration matures as Mikell ages. Mikell makes the choice to go live with his father. His father left his family after Synanon, was an addict, and spent time in prison. Despite this fact, he turns out to be a positive influence on Mikell.

After reading this book, I have so much respect for Mikell. He beat the odds and turned out to be an incredible person with quite a story to tell. He tells his story, despite the incredible and rough circumstances, in an eloquent way. Yes, there is some vulgar language and there are things that might not be pleasant to read, but this is what he lived through. He got where he is through hard work and much struggle. Hearing how much dedication went into his song lyrics gives me a whole new appreciation for his music. Thank you to Celadon Books for the ARC!! #CeladonBooks #HollywoodPark
