So much more than a memoir!
Couldn't put this down! The writing was magnificent and the storytelling captivating. All I knew before reading was it was about a cult. (It's so much more.) It's a coming of age story literally told by the author starting when he was five years old to present day. It is dense - like the banana bread I make. One loaf is full of bananas (3), sugar (1 cup) and butter (1 stick). You think it'll be fluffy and after the first bite, it's so heavy and flavorful it's like a rich cake and you feel like you've eaten dessert. Not expected. I was so mesmerized by Jollett's memoir - it's haunting in terms of the adversity he and his family endured and inspiring in the climb he makes to experience happiness, fulfillment and love. I have heard the audiobook is read by him and includes musical interludes. I love when a book has a playlist that accompanies it - Hollywood Park has its own ALBUM - by Jollett's band!! It's worth reading additional articles about the book.
