This is the type of book, one finds the need to just sit and think about for a few minutes when finished. Mikel Jollett is extremely honest in the portrayal of everything that happened to him from the time he was born while his parents were living in the cult Synanon, his understanding of what F-A-M-I-L-Y really means, coming to terms with his mother’s narcissistic personality, and understanding the broken parts of his own personality before he can truly learn to love someone and have the type of normal life he craves.
A source of strength in Mikel’s life is his father who plays a larger part in his life as he gets into middle school and beyond. His father is there for him trying, with his wife Bonnie, to provide a stable home in spite of some of his own problems with addiction. Mikel can talk some problems out with his father but ultimately is wise enough to understand he needs the help of a therapist to work through some of the broken parts of his life he hasn’t been able to put a name on or understand completely. The reader is left hoping this intelligent young man has truly found the happiness in life he deserves.
