Thanks to Celadon Books for an ARC of this memoir. Before reading this, I was not familiar with Mikel Jollett or his band Airborn Toxic Event so I wasn't really sure what to expect. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have a feeling it will stay with me for awhile. Jollett writes beautifully about his childhood which is fraught with heartache, abuse, drugs, alcohol, and longing. Like all children, Jollett and his brother crave love, guidance, and acceptance from their primary care-giver, their mother. Unfortunately, time and time again they are disappointed. Jollett's father and step-mom, however, serve as a safe harbor for the boys. Providing them with the love and support both boys desperately need. As a result of their tumultuous early years and abuse ridden childhoods, both boys struggle to form attachments while trying to figure out their place in their family and the world. Jollett's poetic descriptions and honest insights into his thoughts and feelings give the reader an intimate look into the dynamics of his family and how deeply his childhood affected the progression of his life. While some events in the book may be hard to read, I found myself totally engrossed and rooting for the Jollett boys to succeed. I would absolutely recommend this memoir, even if you believe this genre isn't for you. Jollett's story oftentimes reads like a novel with suspenseful moments and family members who could rival some of literature's most colorful characters.
