I will start off by saying that I love memoirs! I have a whole shelf devoted to them. I also think it’s hard to review them. I often struggle to put into my own words, thoughts and feelings of the book because I never want to be critical of someone’s hard work. That was not a problem with Hollywood Park! I loved it from the beginning!
.
The book is about Mikel Jollett and it begins when he is escaping the Synanon cult with his family. The book continues through his childhood, which is anything but easy. He writes about emotional abuse, poverty, addiction, and his family.
.
His writing is perfect. I listened to the audiobook, and I often found myself pausing it and grabbing the book because the words were so beautiful and raw! I can’t say enough about the audiobook it was fantastic! It also included music throughout the book and Mikel narrated it, which gave it that personal touch!
.
I would recommend this to all those who loved Educated, The Glass Castle, and The Sound of Gravel. This is one of the best memoirs I’ve read in a long time!
