This book started off solid for me, I was investigated Mikael's story and the cycle of addiction and abuse was clear and heartbreaking, but after a while it felt like more of the same thing over and over again. I get it - that's the cycle, that's just a drop in the bucket compared to what it would feel like for the person living it, but maybe it was just the fact that it was the daily not-all-that-extreme examples that felt almost heartbreakingly close to home for so many people and therefore just a little hard to read. On top of that, this claim takes place very close to home for me (Salem, Oregon) which I think added to that maybe just a little to familiar therefore I don't have to read about it over and over gain feeling for me. I will say, I was invested in Mikael and wanted to see the story through because I felt hopeful he could overcome his circumstances.
