I was sent an early copy of Hollywood Park by Celadon Books, so that I could review it!

Trigger Warnings- This book is intended for a mature audience, and contains elements of child abuse, drug abuse, and other sensitive topics.

Before Mikel Jollette was the lead singer of an indie band, he first had to survive his childhood. Facing struggle and terror, this memoir captures the harrowing reality of being a child of the Church of Synanon. As one of the most notorious cults in history, Synanon was certainly not kind to Mikel or his family, which shaped his childhood experience. After escaping Synanon at six years old with his mother and older brother, Mikel isn’t sure what life is supposed to look like on the outside world, or why they had to leave in the first place. Recounting the challenges of his young life, Hollywood Park is a memoir unlike any other!

You can get your copy of Hollywood Park on May 5th from Celadon Books!

Mikel Jollette’s writing style was rather unusual when compared to typical nonfiction. The story is written in first person present tense, in an attempt to capture the perspective of a child witnessing the events from the story. This choice struck me as rather odd, and actually made the book quite difficult to read for me. I would’ve much preferred that the story be written as a retrospective reflection, rather than attempting to communicate youth through confusing language choices.

My Recommendation-
Though I was not personally a fan of Hollywood Park, I think that some fans of memoirs may appreciate this narrative. Additionally, if you want to read an insider’s perspective to the cruel nature of cult mentalities, you might enjoy Hollywood Park!
