This memoir is equal parts heartbreaking and hopeful. It is narrated by the author, Mikel Jollett and is an emotional retelling of his tumultuous childhood living in a cult commune and then the years after his mother escaped with him and his siblings.

Mikel's writes authentically and vulnerably about the pain of an unstable early childhood and the lingering affects of attachment disorder. What I loved about this memoir is that you can tell the author has done the work of growing from his childhood experiences. He isn't stuck blaming his mother for his difficulties, but he also isn't sugar coating it and excusing it either.

Cults have always fascinated me. I had never heard of this specific one, but this story captured my attention and kept me listening to find out what happened next. It is a testament to the resiliency of humans and the positive roles that his father and step mother played in his life.

A must-read.

Fan of Educated and The Sound of Gravel will love this one. I highly recommend the audio version.
