I’ve waited a long time for this book, and it was well worth the wait. It was like meeting old friends you haven’t seen for a while. The book spans three different decades and Spencer-Fleming does a wonderful job of changing the dialogue and settings to match the era.

The plot follows Russ Van Alstyne as he attempts to solve a murder while he is bombarded with the politics of being a police chief in a small town. The author also gives us a look into Russ’s somewhat troubled past. Meanwhile his wife, Rev. Clare Ferguson, struggles to balance her career with being a new mother. She has her own demons to fight.

In past there were two separate murders in that area that had similar characteristics to the one Russ is currently trying to solve. Is that just a coincidence, or are the murders related?
