Fans of Russ and Claire have waited a few years for this installment of the series, but it was worth the wait. The pace of the book is fast and I didn’t want to put it down. I was afraid that I would lose my familiarity with characters or with the running threads of the series after the lapse since the last book, but that wasn’t the case at all. Like old friends meeting again after a separation of years, we picked up where we had left off.
The book goes back and forth between similar unsolved crimes in 1952, 1972, and present day. Several characters are involved in two or even three of these stories. We get to know more about Russ and his family background through the other stories. Claire is learning along with us, as Russ hasn’t shared the details of his past with her.
It’s interesting to see Russ and Claire adjust to parenthood as they try to carry on demanding careers. Their child is difficult, and Claire is still struggling with her demons, but she is a valuable assistant to Russ as he tries to solve the present day crime by searching for commonalities with the first two. The good news is that while the major plot line is resolved, the book ends with some loose threads, setting the stage for the next book in the series. I’m looking forward to that book already, and hope the wait won’t be nearly as long.
