Russ Van Alstyne and Rev. Claire Fergusson are back in the ninth book in this series. While I’ve read each in the series, this book does well as a stand-alone.

Russ is investigating a mysterious death of a young woman left along the road with no apparent cause of death. She is dressed in party dress left with no identification or belongings. The case is eerily familiar to one Russ was involved in back in 1972. That time, Russ was a suspect. A nearly identical case remains open from 1952.

Hid From our Eyes is written from multiple points of view, across three different time periods. While this could have been confusing, the author does a great job giving each character a distinct voice. The transitions were smooth and seamless. The mystery is well written pulling the reader in as the story builds up to the ending.

I love the story of Russ and Claire, and their complicated backgrounds. Julia Spencer-Fleming creates likeable characters and a great mystery to pull readers into this series.
