I was so happy to delve back into the world of Millers Kill!

The flashback story telling took me a couple of chapters to get used to, but I loved the new character of Jack Liddle and the 20-something-year-old Russ featured in the flashbacks so much that I quickly settled into the story. In fact, I stayed up way too late two nights in a row to finish the book. I couldn't put it down until I knew how it ended. I am now dreaming of prequel to the series featuring a young Russ Van Alstyne.

The intertwining stories were compelling and the new characters of Joni and Jack were as interesting as my old favorites, Russ, Clare, Hadley, Lyle, and Kevin. I hope they both appear in future books.

Although the resolution to the major mystery was foreshadowed a few chapters ahead of the characters figuring out whodunit, the resolution (or non-resolution) of the intertwining secondary stories were surprising and left me looking forward to the next book, which the author promises will arrive before another 6 years have passed! This mystery's major story line isn't the most compelling reason to read the book, its really about the relationships between the characters that keeps me coming back time after time. This book, like its predecessors, captures what it is like to live in a small town (although with a much higher crime rate!) and features people that you feel might walk out the pages and live next door to you, with all their joys and foibles.
