Hello (From Here) is a generally enjoyable young adult story about two teens who meet at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. They begin a socially distanced romance, as both struggle with the many changes brought on during 2020. Together, the characters' experiences encompass many of the societal issues from the past two years (although there is no reference to the BLM protests, perhaps the book ended before this)-- financial stresses, essential work, immune compromised loved ones, disrupted plans, grief and loss, mental health struggles. While both main characters were enjoyable and I very much liked the beginning, I did find myself losing interest as the book continued. I think this may have been due to my empathy for the character of Jonah (a character with acknowledged privilege but also anxiety) running thin-- I just had a hard time understanding some of his actions. Still, as someone who is generally skeptical of "pandemic art", particularly as we are still in the throes of a pandemic, I was surprised by how much I ended up enjoying this book.
