Fell flat and felt disconnected
I was intrigued by the premise of this book as I love historical accounts, but this one did not hit the mark. The different anecdotes did not feel like they were connected as a whole and I never made any emotional connection to any of the characters. While the idea was promising, the whole thing read more like a series of short essays to me rather a novelization of actual events.
In addition to my issues above, and this may have been because I received an e Arc, it was very difficult to read. Paragraphs were cut off and chopped up, book information was scrawled across the bottom of every single page, and there odd breaks throughout the entire document. Despite this, I pushed through and finished the book, but these formatting issues made it a real struggle.
What I did enjoy was that the author really set a feeling of place. This isn't the glitzy New York you usually read about and it offered a more typical person's experience.
