Growing Up on Bank Street by Donna Florio is a memoir of the author’s experience from her Greenwich Village days. The way that she related her story brought the reader back in time to feel like an actual part of the neighborhood. We got to see the elegant brownstones and their occupants.
At the same time, Donna Florio also gave up those merchants and all the others that were a part of this area and neighbors through her eyes. Her bohemian upbringing brought readers into a world of theater people, artists, actors, rock stars and the like that most of us will never meet. It was very interesting sharing her memories in this way. Usually, I am not particularly drawn to memoirs in general. However, this one certainly came as a delightful surprise and a great read in how it progressed. I found it truly fascinating and so colorful as it went from page to page.
