When I first started this book, it reminded me a lot of Yarros' other book, The Last Letter. The romance aspect, the dual perspectives, the man returning from the military. But the story is completely different and deals with other issues. Cam is the black sheep of his family, even though he has been in the military for a decade. Willow is Cam's younger brother's widow, as Cam's brother died in combat. The pair have a clear connection, but it is seen as forbidden. In addition, there is a storyline with Cam's dad dealing with early-onset dementia was so real and heart-breaking. Willow's strength and support was written so well.

This book started a little slow for me and I felt that I knew where it was going, but by about halfway through, I couldn't put it down. I was drawn into the characters, the story and how it was all going to wrap up. Everything did come together in a way that made sense and was great for the story.
