The first thing that drew me in was the book cover followed by the title. After reading the synopsis, I knew I wanted to read this book. Having read it I feel a bit let down. I honestly thought that the book would be more about the author's life with her dogs since that's what the title says. It was more about her life story from childhood as a boy, growing up into a man, and the transition into becoming a woman. Along the way, things like family obligation, finding yourself, being true to yourself, getting courage to do something which can seem impossible, and giving and receiving love are themes heavily touched on.

As the author goes about their life and the unique journey that brings, the dogs in her life help her through at different stages. One of the other things I didn't like was all the jumping around. I get digressing when talking to someone or telling a story in person, but that's hard to translate exactly the same on paper. Sure, some flashbacks are ok but sometimes going off on a tangent before coming back and finishing a though makes it harder to remember the original point. Maybe that's just her writing style and maybe if I would've read the previous memoirs I would've felt more connected to this book. I appreciate the journey I got to read and the mention of the dogs but if you're going to name your book the way it is, maybe there should be more depth to the dogs involvement in the story.
