I think the author is an excellent writer and storyteller. I loved the idea of telling periods of life in relation to the dogs at the time. Each chapter was divided into a time period with the dog owned at that time.
I found the story interesting to see what went on in the author’s life and thoughts with the transition from a man into a woman. I feel like I have a better understanding of what lead to this choice.
However, even though each chapter had a set time period, the stories told in each chapter would jump around in time, not staying within the set time period. For example, the first chapter is set when the author is young, but some stories took place during college and adult years. I felt like even though the layout of the book was in chronological order, the stories weren’t actually told in a linear fashion. Additionally, stories would be told that seemed to have no importance or had nothing to do with what was told before or after, but then the importance might become clear later on when another story references the first, but by that time the story is forgotten. I feel like if a little story isn’t important until later, then it should be incorporated later when it’s relevant.
Overall, I think that this book shows that we can’t possibly know what someone is thinking or feeling. Everyone struggles with something, but some people keep it in for a long time. Also, pets can help to understand yourself and help you get through whatever you’re going through.
