A seemingly innocent book about dogs, that really has so much more to offer.

Just from the small portion I have read, this book packs in so much more than dogs and the author's relationship with those canines who have come and gone in her life. It's clear from early on that this is going to be a poignant life journey, no doubt reflected in her life with dogs, but still a story that belongs solidly to her.

The writing is at the same time emotional and flippant, as if the undercurrent of the words carries the real message, testing the reader in small pieces to make sure that acceptance might be teased out along the way. This trepidation is not surprising, likely the reflection of how Jennifer Finney Boylan has had to live a good majority of her life, wondering not only how she feels about herself, but also how others will perceive the real her.

This is an intriguing piece and I am looking forward to learning more of the story. There is much one can learn from someone through their relationship with animals.
