I fell in love with Hudson Wheeler from the very first chapter.
There's something very refreshing about a main character in Young Adult fiction that's just a normal teenager who doesn't really have to deal with insane amounts of drama and life-changing events. It's just the everyday actions and consequences of living life, if an albeit slightly unconventional one.
That doesn't mean that there isn't some solid writing here, because Berla created a story that's full of strong character growth and a great message within a perfectly paced plot. Even the characters I didn't like brought something to the story and to Hudson's life.
Overall, it's a coming of age story that centers on the connections one makes and how they shape you as a person. It's made even better by fact that it comes wrapped up in a story about puppy love and growing older with a dash of mystery.
I highly recommend this for anyone looking to get out of the dystopia/high-drama slump that YA occasionally falls into.
