While there are many young adult books set in the futuristic landscape where one must flee earth to save humanity, this book takes a unique approach. To think, a teenager goes to sleep for a short period, only to find out it has been hundreds of years, not a couple like she thought? Not only that, but everyone thinks she's a goddess cause she can use technology? How could I not like that? I really appreciated the main character, Andra. If it hadn't been for her perspective, thoughts, and stubborn character, I wouldn't have liked this book. Don't get me wrong, I liked the other characters. Zhade was frustratingly secretive, but funny at times, and I easily disliked Maret, the deranged ruler, as one should. But it was Andra's reactions to her insane circumstances that were the most entertaining and, above all, realistic. I appreciated that she didn't wallow in her misfortune. She took it in stride and adapted which made her all the more likable in my opinion. Further, she regularly pointed out how ridiculous everyone was acting and speaking, mirroring my own thoughts. Speaking of speech, the slang does take some getting used to. Keep in mind, there is no dictionary, so if you don't get it, you are fresh out of luck. That was my major drawback to this book. They used the words "reck" so many times and it was felt like different contexts each time, that I had a hard time figuring it out was hard to do. I feel like there should be a small key in the back or front to help the readability, in my opinion.Thankfully, while how they speak is weird, it isn't utterly impossible to understand, but after a while, it just kind of got old. I do appreciate the continuity of using the odd language throughout the book, but I would be lying if I said that I liked having to decipher what they were saying all the time.
Not only did I like the premise, and characters, there was always something happening. Every so often, you would get a big revelation or event, and it made me want to read on. Not only that, but the ending was shocking and makes me eager for a sequel! I can't wait to read more from this author and would definitely recommend!
