I am so so excited to be talking about this amazing book today. I was lucky to get a copy from Bookish First and even though I don't often read sci-fi, this is one of my new favourite novels!!
I admit I was nervous for the first few chapters. There’s some very unique language differences for some of the characters, which took me off guard. However, after a while I started to get used to it and was fascinated by the detail the author had put in to creating this future world. Honestly, I might’ve started using some of the words in my head haha!
I really loved the characters in this book too oh my goodness! The main character, especially, was so fun to read about because she was put across as someone who was very normal. I don’t think there are enough normal (ish) protagonists in young adult SFF these days-the main characters often seem to have to be the chosen one. While I love these chosen-one stories, I loved reading something like this that broke that stereotype! I also found the romance to be intriguing. At first, I wasn’t sure about whether I supported the romance, but by the end I have to admit I was shipping it. I couldn’t help it!!
The thing that really knocked me off my feet about this book (besides the unique language, fascinating characters, and dazzling world building) was literally just the plot. OMG how can I explain? The plot was so deftly created and I am so impressed that this is a debut, seriously. Especially within the last 100 pages when the plot twists were coming every few pages. Phew! I am a huge fan of plot twists but these took it to a whole other level, because with each twist my entire perception of the world and the characters within it changed!!
I was totally blown away by this novel and if you are a fan of sci-fi, plot twists, or unlikely heroes I bet you will be too!
