I wasn't expecting much from this book so I was surprised when it blew me away. It's compulsively readable, and what Johnson does with language is brilliant. There's a whole slang and language that evolved from English and it's both confusing and consistent, so you slowly get used to it and understand it easier as you read. Like I said. Brilliant.

The plot started out engaging (cryogenically frozen girl wakes up 1000 years too late and people think she's a goddess) and then twisted and turned until basically everything you think you know at the beginning is wrong. The betrayals and sacrifices and not-actually-betrayals come hard and fast, and you grow to care about the characters even when it seems like you can't trust... any of them, really.

I can't wait for book 2.
