Overrated
The cover of Gilded is very stunning and that is what drew me in. I did enjoy an excerpt so I took the plunge and pre-ordered a copy of the book. Unfortunately, Gilded turned out to be a “dud.” Granted, the first few chapters were exciting but once the straw got spun into gold, it was downhill from there.
The characters are many and I couldn’t quite see the point of having so many shallow characters when a few really developed ones would suffice. That being said, I did not have a connection with any of the characters — even the protagonist Serilda.
The plot wasn’t a simple retelling. There were several tangents and I wasn’t familiar with the characters that were introduced. Thus, I got distracted from the main story.
To me Gilded is overrated and overly long. With its lackluster storytelling, it was a chore to read. Perhaps I will develop a taste for this novel at a later point in time when I’m not comparing it with some very stellar books that I was reading at the same time.
At a chonky 512 pages, Gilded was not an impressive read. To me, it’s just a long and drawn out story that could have neatly fit into 300 pages or less. One unimpressive star — a DNF at 34%
