This is one of my favorite fairy tale retellings that I have read in a long time. I wasn’t sure how I felt about a Rumplestiltskin retelling but I was wrong, I needed this book and now I need the sequel. Serilda is a miller’s daughter but she is special in that the god of lies blessed her birth but most of the villages considers it a curse. She is a marvelous story teller which is not an appreciated talent in her village. One night she meets a villain she believed to be mythical and protecting another’s life she says she can spin straw into gold. When she is brought to complete the impossible task she meets a poltergeist who tells her to call him Gild. I loved the character of Gild and Serilda and cannot wait to find out what happens to them in the next book. I thought the story was very well spun and while there were elements of the familiar story there was also so much more to it. My only downside was how late I got it so I couldn’t review it the first week.
