After reading the first look I was intrigued because what better than a fairy tale romance to start my year. To be honest though I was quite disappointed by this book. It follows our protagonist Serilda after she gets involved in some unpleasant magical business and must figure out a way to survive her troubles to come. I found the tone to be a little off-putting. If you've read some of Marissa Meyers other works you'll know she tends to write with a middle-grade audience in mind while incorporating some darker themes. In some of her other books like The Lunar Chronicles and the Renegades series, the comedic bits worked well with the stories and characters. For Gilded though, I felt the writing seemed inconsistent and ultimately lacking at times. I wasn't invested in any of the characters, including Serilda I might add, and while likeability isn't the most important of traits, I think it would have made the story much more compelling. I possibly would have enjoyed this book if I had read it at an earlier age, but as of now I have to say it was rather lack-luster.
