Darker than previous works
I absolutely adored the Cinder series Meyer penned prior to Gilded. I was therefore intrigued to once again read another take she had on transforming a fairy tale.
Gilded stays a bit more to the original story of Rumpelstiltskin. No placing it in a more futuristic setting or combining with cyborgs. That part I didn't mind. What got to me was the darkness of the story.
I fully recognize this is a personal preference and that it is rude to box authors in based on their previous works (even though I'm doing just that).
I feel like I would've liked this book better if I'd known going in that this wasn't going to be a lighter YA fiction that I had gotten used to with her previous books that I read. This is not to say that the story itself was bad or wasn't innovative. I don't believe either was true. It just did not scratch the particular itch that I desired and was a little bit darker than what I was looking for. Not sure I'll pick up the sequel when it comes out.
