gilded by marissa meyer, who is my all time favourite author, is the first in a fantasy duology inspired by german folklore, the fairytale of rumplestiltskin, and the wild hunt. when the miller’s daughter serilda accidentally lies to the wrong person, she catches the attention of the erlking, who demands her of the impossible task to spin straw into gold and whisks her away to a mysterious castle where she encounters a magical boy and secrets within its walls.

i really enjoyed reading gilded, even though it was really different than the lunar chronicles and renegades especially in the setting and atmosphere. gilded’s expansive historically inspired setting is darker and often grim, with less moments of levity and snarky banter of an ensemble cast. however, i think it does fit the story better and i thought that it was really well written. it’s been really interesting and cool to see marissa meyer writing books like instant karma and gilded that are so different from her earlier books!!

the book was really suspenseful and twisty and i did not see that ending coming at all and also i’m kind of upset that i have to wait like half a year for a sequel haha. it’s like the wait between the renegades trilogy books all over again. i also really liked how gilded was able to mesh together the wild hunt and rumplestiltskin and also struck a good balance between keeping elements of original fairytales and making it fresh and unpredictable. she also never fails to write the best romance subplots, and serilda and gild are so absolutely perfect for each other <3
