I love books that are a retelling of old fairy tales. This is exactly that…. But more. This book told the story of rumplestiltskin. But he’s not the main character. Instead, it tells the strange and sorrowful story of Serilda. A lot of mysteries surround Serilda including her birth, and her unusual eyes. Serilda seems like a modern woman- strong-willed; wise; and very cunning.
After Serilda gets herself in a mess after saving two “moss maidens” from death. She uses her skills at “weaving” stories to create a lie to save their lives. This lie leads her on a tumultuous journey that will put her closest relationships at risk.
The author fleshes out the characters so as a reader you begin to feel what they feel, and see what they see. They begin to feel real, which is hard to do in a fantasy retelling of a fairy tale.
Some parts of the book to drag on and could probably be cut back, but overall it’s a thrilling book that keeps your interest until the final page. I’m eagerly looking forward to the sequel to see what happens next!
