Reimagining fairy tales is a special gift, and Marissa Meyer does it very well.

GILDED is a retelling of the Rumpelstiltskin story focusing on a young girl names Serilda. Serilda is the teaching assistant to an old witch of a teacher named Madam Sauer. Madam Sauer scolds and berates Serilda for her creative storytelling claiming that they are all nothing but lies—even though the younger children who hear them are captivated by the stories and find a bit of joy in the midst of their otherwise dull life.

According to the old stories that Serilda enjoys, the Snow Moon that comes at the New Year is a special time filled with enchantments. At the appropriate time Serilda goes out under the moonlight in search of these wonders and enchantments. Along her search she meets some enchanted moss maidens and offers them kindness. Then she encounters the king and his band of hunters. When the king asks her what she is doing out alone at night in the snow, Serilda gradually finds herself suggesting that the golden rye grass she collected could be spun into gold. That seals Serilda’s fate.

This is an exceptionally well written story with well drawn characters. It reads like a fairy tale but with a new twist, a new Rumpelstiltskin. The character of Serilda was captivating enough that I was drawn into the story and wanted to read it to the end. I would love the opportunity to do that and h,ope that I am given it by BookishFirst.
