Wow. I remember loving Marissa Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles, but it’s been a while, and I couldn’t quite remember why.

Now I remember. It’s her characters. And the way she is able to weave them into a highly complex world.

The difference between the Lunar Chronicles and this is that this world is much more mystical. There’s a lot of soft world building. Magical things are left unexplained, creatures are pulled from many different fairy tales. It leaves me wondering about the folklore that inspired all of this. It feels like watching a Ghibli movie. There’s so much vibrance and excitement, even though it’s pretty dark.

Marissa Meyer does a wonderful job of creating complex characters, especially the more magical ones. Fairy tales often tell different accounts of these creatures, with a variety of descriptions. She is very good at blending those differences into one complex personality.

I wasn’t expecting the excerpt to be so long. Usually, they are just a couple short chapters, which doesn’t give me enough to feel invested in the plot and characters. This was just enough to hook me. I want the main character to succeed, I am already starting to empathize with the Erlking even though he’s the villain, and I’m very interested to see what other creatures and stories will get added to this story.

I am absolutely in love with this, and I only read an excerpt. I highly recommend checking this out. I am definitely going to be picking this book up as soon as I’m able to!
