Although it is a little hard for me personally to take a haunting retelling of Rumpelstiltskin (one in which I suspect Rumpelstiltskin himself is the love interest) 100% seriously, this excerpt was entertaining to read! The wintery, whimsical atmosphere is very strong and well down, and while I found bits of it to be a little bit cheesy, I did enjoy how palpable the magic was throughout the book. While I liked Serilda enough and especially found her tendency to lie and make up stories fun, her character didn't particularly stand out to me or draw me in, and, while we only just met the likely love interest (who is, again, Rumplestiltskin) I don't particularly think this book's romance would be appealing to me personally. So overall, while the writing is certainly good, the atmosphere is palpable, and Meyer does a good job of making this premise feel more serious and grounded in this excerpt, I don't really think this book is for me at all (though again I can see other people, especially younger teens, really enjoying this).
