I'm already fond of retellings, and this one has a promising start.

The start of this story is already atmospheric and grabbed me from the first page. Serilda is a flawed protagonist, but I couldn't help but love her immediately. She's a strong woman with an overly active imagination, struggling to make a place for herself in a town that doesn't quite accept her quirks, preferring females to stay in their place. Her imagination and stories are pegged as lies, and no one believes her, even when she tells the truth, so naturally when she runs into the Alder King one night, her own father doesn't believe her.

As a Rumplestiltskin retelling, this one has a lot of promise. I haven't been this enchanted by this fairy tale since Spinning Silver, and I'm just as eager to get my hands on the full version of this book as I was for that one. However, this story is written in a completely different style, and I really like how it's done. The interaction between the characters and Serilda's own personality is really intriguing, and I can't wait to read more of this. I honestly knew I wanted a copy of this book even before reading the First Look, but now that I've gotten a tiny taste, I definitely want more.
