I didn't enjoy this book nearly as much as the other book I've read by this author. This book was very graphic in its descriptions of the violence of war as well as having very descriptive sex scenes. There were instances of rape and domestic violence in addition to the war theme.
I did enjoy the descriptions of India during the colonial period, especially learning that they used elephants as a form of cavalry. I know I wouldn't want to be near an elephant if it was killed. I'd imagine many people were squished by injured elephants.
The main characters, Theo and Constance, were total opposites. I was rooting for Theo and hoping that Connie would get what she deserved.
I had a hard time telling how much time was passing in the story, which made it difficult to understand some of it.
