Based off the beginning of this, I really expected to end this by giving this by five stars. It started off so incredibly strong, but it just lost all of the steam it had. The entire middle of this was predictable, and felt like mainly filler pages. I was ready for it to be over at about 400 pages, but it continued dragging on for what felt like forever.

I think a lot of my problem with this book was the way it was written. I don’t think it could’ve been much more confusing. In between the unexplained 1,020 year time skip, and the two characters who are clearly related in some way, but are explained vaguely, this just didn’t work. Thankfully, I was buddy reading this, so my buddies were able to explain, but I’m still confused on so many points.

Another complaint about the writing style! The author just totally neglected to give us the characters ages. Although this doesn’t seem like a big deal, it really would’ve helped. Especially because of the age gap between Simon and Elianna, I think it’s 8 years, but that’s just a guess.

I also just didn’t care about the characters, especially Elianna. She is supposed to be an assassin, and an incredibly deadly one at that. For some reason though, every single time she is put in a position to fight, she has to be rescued because she almost died. Come on, she was just so incredibly cocky, but had absolutely nothing to back it up.

On the other hand, I liked Rielle better, but she was mainly boring. Her trials got repetitive very quickly, and although she’s portrayed as tipping on the edge of evil, I never got that feeling. She’s also infatuated with a voice in her head, which got a bit much when she got lustful for it. Yah, she just was a bit weird and boring.

I may end up picking up the exit book, but it’s definitely not on my list of must reads. I’m hoping it pulls out some amazing twists, but I’m not sure if that will actually happen. All in all, a great premise, but a failed execution.
