I liked where the plot was going but everything felt very ... unsubtle? I'm all for learning about the world early on, but the information dump felt a bit forced. And the character dialog was oddly straightforward.
"You’re a monster! You’re evil!" Yeah, you tell her Simon.
"He would have to use his magic—his half-blood marque magic, the
traveling magic that had doomed nearly all of his kind—to send them
both hundreds of miles away, to Borsvall and to safety." Is this a book or a plot summary?
I honestly couldn't get through the First Look.
