I really enjoyed Frizzy. It reminded me so much of my own natural hair journey though I started straightening my hair when I was in middle school and didn't have an awesome Tia to teach me to love my curls. I liked that it addressed the concept of good hair heard so often in Black families and families with distant Black ancestry. The illustrations were a delight and perfectly captured a Dominican household right down to the many portraits of Jesus on the wall. I thought judging Jesus was a fun touch! This also captured that family pressure and the comparisons to your cousin who has the good hair. I liked too we also addressed the mother's feelings about her own hair and her journey with the anti-Blackness being passed generationally. Marlene is a girl young Latinas will see themselves in. And this is a graphic novel that truly resonates!
