Marlene and her mom go to the salon every Sunday, but Marlene hates it. She hates that it makes her feel like she has bad hair and that she is ugly. Her mother makes Marlene straighten her hair so she will look presentable and nice. She wants to wear her hair naturally, but does not know how to care for it properly. On a particularly bad hair day, her classmates make fun of Marlene's hair and put tape in it, but instead of her bullies getting in trouble, Marlene ends up with detention. Her mother is furious and sends her to her aunt's for the weekend. There she learns that there is no bad hair only good hair. Her aunt helps Marlene learn how to care for her hair properly and learn how to love it. She explains how ideas about hair are passed down from generation to generation and that it is not Marlene's mother's fault that she believes what she does. Will Marlene's mother let her daughter wear her hair how she wants?
