I am so glad I was able to let my daughter read this book. She is at the stage in her life in which she cares alot about how others think about her. We read it together. Marlene, the main character in Frizzy is strong and I believe my daughter could identify with her. Loved the bright and colorful illustrations.
While we were reading the book my daughter commented the th school scene was exactly how it was at her school. It is very sad that our society thinks straight hair is good hair. However, I do think this is changing as you see more and more African Americans with natural hair. But all in all, it is up to the person on how they want to wear their hair.
My daughter's review: The book was very interesting and the character was very creative and well built. The book spoke to me. I felt a strong connection with the main character.
The book definitely opened up a line of communication with my daughter so we can talk about our hair.
