*I did not receive the book I won fromBookishfirst. I checked out the book from my local library.

This book was precious and cute and everything I love in an mg novel. The story of Marlene, who wants nothing more than to not spend every Sunday getting her hair painfully straightened is uplifting yet frustrating at the same time. I touched upon some important themes like forgiveness, racism and internalized anti-blackness.

I loved the family dynamics and the friendships. The artwork was cute and easy to read.

This heartfelt story will touch the lives of many girls in Marlene's shoes and I think books like this are incredibly important. I had tears in my eyes by the end of the story and I think it will touch other people's hearts. I will definitely make sure to place multiple copies in my son's free library, so others can enjoy this book as much I enjoyed it.
