To start off, the cover is wonderful! It'd definitely catch my eye in a bookstore.
The message of being yourself and embracing your uniqueness is such an important message (for children AND adults!). Beautiful illustrations will engage the reader (particularly younger readers). I loved the incorporation of the Dominican culture and Spanish words.
At its core, this is a story of self discover, but also family and friendship. Marlene is a well-crafted and relatable character, with a bit of sweet and sassy thrown in, and you can't help but root for her.
The ending seemed to wrap up a bit too neatly, but it did feel appropriate for the target audience.
