This graphic novel follows Marlene, a Dominican girl who hates going to the salon every sunday to straighten her curly hair. She wants to look like herself and not always being compared to her cousin. With getting help from her best friend and her Tía Ruby, Marlene will find a way to let her hair be free.

This is a common thing in the latino community, with Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, etc., we all who came out with darker skin or frizzy curly hair get treaty just like Marlene's. It is an old way of things, to look more anglo. Thinking there is only one way to look "good" and the way we already look is "bad".

And the way this book is wholesome but quite important. It is going to help kids having the same problems. To learn to love yourself despite what other says on how you look or act. To not follow the way of society's standards or even adult's olden ways. There is no "good" or "bad" way.
