💭Thoughts:
This is a cute middle grade graphic novel with a strong message about being yourself. The graphics are beautiful and engaging. This is the first graphic novel I’ve read.

I really felt for Marlene. Being taken to the salon by her mother every Sunday for the painful straightening process and feeling like she wasn’t allowed to refuse. As someone who also has curly hair, I felt a lot of pressure as a child to wear my hair in a ponytail and not wear it down naturally. I was also bullied, but thankfully was never forced to the salon by my mother. I’m glad she had an aunt who was a supportive person in her life.

I think this book has several valuable lessons for kids to learn. It is okay to be yourself, no matter what anyone else thinks and you are never to hound to stand up for yourself

This book has a sweet ending and HEA for both Marlene and her mother.
